Artist Statement

My work examines what we associate and identify as feminine and how we interact with different brands of femininity. The surreal and suggestive images in my paintings on upholstery fabric, are derived from common language slurs and pet names in our slang and everyday language that are assigned to women. The liberated images are empowered with over-the-top wit, bold sexuality, kitschy domesticity, girliness, and above all, self-consciousness.

In my work, cliché girlish pattern and color evoke and parody femininity as a cultural construct. The “figures” in my paintings simultaneously poke fun at and embody stereotypes that pigeon-hole women as housekeepers, sex objects, decorations or symbols of their man’s social cache. My work is intentionally provocative and sarcastic, challenging the viewer to reflect about the confining and one-dimensional identities that we expect women in our society to uphold.
